Info

The Tango Café was a coffee shop in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which operated for 10 years, 2003-2012.
It was owned by Liliana Petruy of Mendoza, Argentina, with help from her two daughters. It was conceived as a cultural center as well as a coffee shop with Argentinean lunch and snack items. The Tango Café became noteworthy for its cultural impact on the surrounding community, through dance, music, literature, art. In addition, throughout the Café's lifetime, up to six Spanish language classes were taught per week at levels from beginner through advanced.
When a development project for the nearby intersection was proposed in 2008 , supporters in the community developed a petition to insist on the relocation of the Café and lobbied for its survival in several community meetings. The Forward Square Project was halted the following year. Nevertheless, the closing of a nearby movie theatre spelled financial difficulties for the Café. In January 2012, the Tango Café closed.
