The Bahía del Duque is a hotel on Tenerife. It was constructed in 1993. Designed by the Tenerife-born architect Andrés Piñeiro, the hotel was first planned as a large 4-star investment, but the idea of a 5-star luxury establishment soon won over, marking the beginning of 5-star developments in the now exclusive Costa Adeje region.Originally constructed in the midst of a semi desert, the hotel was the first large project of Andrés Piñeiro, launching his career as an architect of luxury hotels around the world,. The style that predominates in the establishment is a mixture between a typical Canarian Village, a Venetian plaza and a botanical garden with ponds, springs and waterfalls. The hotel is built directly on the sea front of the Atlantic Ocean, on the El Duque Beach.
The hotel occupies 100 000m², of which 63 000m² are gardens. A few of the 5 swimming pools join together to form cascades, flowing from one level to the other, creating ponds and rivers. Each of the 20 buildings differs from the other, creating a feeling of an authentic town, steeping gently to the sea front. The staff uniforms are stylised to copy traditional Canarian dress.
Most of the 356 rooms have been decorated by Pascua Ortega, the Madrid-born interior designer, who has also decorated the private houses of the Spanish Royal Family. Pascua Ortega is responsible for the look of 40 villas which opened in January 2008. Bahía del Duque opened its doors to the Spa Bahía del Duque in the spring 2009. This Thalassotherapy Spa was named Best Spa in Spain 2011 by Condé Nast Johansens (Spain) and was nominated in the Best of the Best Awards 2011 by Virtuoso.
The investments and developments in the structure as well as the quality of service in the Bahía del Duque have converted the hotel in an important point of reference for the tourism of Tenerife It is a source of employment for the local community in the South of the Tenerife Island.
Michael Schumacher, Margaret Thatcher, Brian May, Mariah Carey, Luis Miguel and John Major have stayed in the hotel.
The Bahía del Duque Hotel belongs to the Group CIO (Compañia de las Islas Occidentales), that since 1850 has led the tobacco industry in the Canary Islands until selling the tobacco division (CITA) to the UK based Gallagher Company in 2005. Lately the CIO Group has been positioned in five different business areas, with great emphasis on the tourist and real estate sector.
Bahía del Duque is the only member in the south of Tenerife of The Leading Hotels of the World and Virtuoso.
