Oslo Metropolitan University (Oslo Met or OMU; Norwegian: Oslomet – storbyuniversitetet) is a state university in Oslo and Akershus in Norway. It conducts research and offers studies from the bachelor's level to the PhD level in the social sciences, health sciences, education and international studies, and technology, art and design; it is one of Norway's largest research institutions in the social sciences. The university has around 1,400 academic employees (of which over 150 are professors/research professors, the top rank in Norway), around 20,000 students and around 800 administrative support staff.Oslo Metropolitan University was established on 12 January 2018 and is the youngest of Norway's new universities. It evolved from what was until 2018 Norway's largest university college, Oslo and Akershus University College, which was itself the result of many previous mergers of around 30 former colleges and research institutes in the Oslo area. It should not be confused with Norway's oldest university, the University of Oslo. Unlike the older universities, most of Oslo Metropolitan University's predecessor institutions historically focused on education in professions such as teaching, engineering, nursing, social work and journalism, but from the 1990s they gradually became more similar to the universities by broadening their scope to include more academic fields and by placing increased emphasis on research and education at the master's and PhD levels, while the university colleges also received most of the same rights as the universities. In 2014 and 2016 the then-university college also merged with four of Norway's largest and most well-established social sciences research institutes, thus greatly expanding the institution's overall research activity and making it the country's second largest social sciences research institution, second only to the University of Oslo.
Most of the university is located in the city centre of Oslo along the Pilestredet street, with subsidiary campuses in Sandvika and Kjeller in Akershus. The rector of the university is Curt Rice.
