Wesleyan University ( WESS-lee-ən) is a private liberal arts college in Middletown, Connecticut, founded in 1831. Wesleyan is a Baccalaureate College that emphasizes undergraduate instruction in the arts and sciences, grants research master's degrees in many academic disciplines, and grants PhD degrees in biology, chemistry, mathematics and computer science, molecular biology and biochemistry, music, and physics.Wesleyan was ranked as the third best liberal arts college in the nation in 2016. The university is among the most selective in the nation, receiving 12,788 applications for the Class of 2022 and accepting only 2,233 students, yielding a 17.5% acceptance rate. Wesleyan alumni have won Pulitzer Prizes, Emmy Awards, Tony Awards and several other awards in their post-collegiate careers.
Founded under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church and with the support of prominent residents of Middletown, the now-secular university was the first institution of higher education to be named after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. About 20 unrelated colleges and universities were subsequently named after Wesley. Wesleyan, along with Amherst College and Williams College, is a member of the Little Three colleges.
