Info
Fresh Meadows Playground takes its name from the surrounding neighborhood, which was named after the freshwater springs that spouted water throughout the rolling landscape. In the colonial period, the only two roads traversing this area were Fresh Meadow Lane and Black Stump Road, the latter named after blackened tree stumps that delineated property boundaries.Following World War II, Fresh Meadows experienced rapid residential growth and there was a need for a new public school in the neighborhood. On July 24, 1947 the city’s Board of Estimate proposed one on the site of Utopia Playground. Citing the high cost and a buried pond beneath the site, Parks Commissioner Robert Moses opposed the idea and the Utopia Playground was saved. Public School 173 was instead built a couple of blocks to the north with its Fresh Meadow Playground as its schoolyard. The school serves students between prekindergarten and fifth grade.
