The Territorial Abbey of St. Mary of Grottaferrata (Italian: Abbazia territoriale di Santa Maria di Grottaferrata Latin: Abbatia territorialis B. Mariae Cryptaeferratae ) also called Exarchial Monastery of St. Mary of Grottaferrata Is the name given to a Catholic cathedral and monastery in Grottaferrata, a particular eastern seat of the Catholic Church, immediately subject to the Holy See, which belongs to the Lazio region and part of the Byzantine Catholic Church in Italy (also called the Italo-Albanian rite ). As a national monument, it is protected by the MIBACT.It was founded in the year 1004 by Saint Nile of Rossano, and finished in the year 1024 by Saint Bartholomew.
However the territorial Abbey of Grottaferrata is still formally preserved as one of the few territorial abbeys within the Catholic Church.

In 1880 the Holy See ordered the liturgy of the monastery to be purged of the Latin elements that had been introduced over the centuries. Vocations were no longer sought from the general Italian population, but instead chiefly among Italo-Albanians, and the monks set up new monasteries in Sicily and Calabria. On November 1, 1571, the Italian Basilian Order of Grottaferrata was established. On September 26, 1937, the abbey was made a territorial abbacy.
