Info
The Academy of American Studies is a selective public high school in Long Island City, Queens, New York, which was founded in 1996 by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. It consists of 1021 students, though during its first decade, the school had anywhere between 400 and 600 students. The school gives preference to Queens applicants in the admissions process, though it has a decent representation of students from the other boroughs. The Academy is not to be confused with the High School of American Studies at Lehman College, a specialized high school in the Bronx. Academy of American Studies is not a specialized high school, and thus does not require students to take the SHSAT for admission. As of the 2014-15 school year, the school had an enrollment of 877 students and 36.4 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 24.1:1. There were 497 students (56.7% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 122 (13.9% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.A new building for the school is planned to open in September 2020 on the site of the current school yard and parking lot.
