Goa Medical College (GMC) is a government medical college and hospital in Goa, India. It was built when Goa was a part of Portugal in 1842 as the Escola Médico-Cirúrgica de (Nova) Goa (Medical-Surgical School of [new] Goa). It is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia., the only other exceptions being the French founded JIPMER (formerly Ecole de Médicine de Pondichéry) in 1823 and the British founded Calcutta Medical College in 1835. The college also has one of the oldest active medical libraries worldwide (since 1845) offering an insight into its resources and earning it the reputation of one of modern India's top medical schools.Originally located in Panjim in a Portuguese-era structure, it was relocated to Alto-Bambolim in 1993. The college has been under Goa University since 1986 prior to which it was under the Bombay University (1963-1985). The Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (Bambolim), the T.B. Cunha and Chest disease hospital (St. Inez), the Rural Health and Training Centre (Mandur) and the Urban Health Centre (St. Cruz) form parts of the Establishment. The college is affiliated to the Goa University and offers the MBBS course alongside several MS and MD courses. Some courses with some super-specializations are also awarded.
Goa Medical College (GMC) and Goa Dental College are located opposite each other on either side of the highway connecting Goa's capital Panjim with its commercial capital, Margao. The area in between these colleges has kiosks and vendors selling home-made food, groceries, refreshments, coconuts etc. A pedestrian subway has been constructed to connect both institutes.
The current acting Dean of Goa Medical College is Dr. Pradeep Naik, an ophthalmologist.
