Banana plants are heavy feeders, but they are not heavy feeders of all nutrients equally. Their NPK needs are skewed. They use a lot of nitrogen for leaf growth and a tremendous amount of potassium for stem strength, water regulation, and fruit development. Phosphorus is needed only in small amounts. This is why the standard recommendation for bananas is a fertilizer with an NPK ratio around 3:1:6—three times as much nitrogen as phosphorus, and three times as much potassium as nitrogen. A 6-2-12 or 8-2-12 product fits this profile. A 10-10-10 product does not.

Reading an NPK label is simple once you know what to look for. The three numbers are always in the same order: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. A 6-2-12 fertilizer has 6% nitrogen, 2% phosphorus, and 12% potassium. For bananas, the third number should be the highest. The first number should be moderate, and the second number should be low. If you see a fertilizer with a high middle number—like 5-10-5—it is designed for root crops or flowers, not bananas
