What is gastric bypass surgery?

The sleeve gastrectomy , also known as gastric reduction surgery, is one of the most popular procedures in bariatric surgery. It reduces nutrient absorption and removes the ghrelin hormone (appetite hormone).

Gastric reduction surgery is performed laparoscopically. Through four small incisions in the abdomen, and using camera instruments, the operation takes about one hour. Patients can usually get up independently just four hours later. A three-day hospital stay is necessary for observation. After that, patients return to their normal lives.

Sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most effective bariatric surgery procedures: After six months, patients lose about 50% of their excess weight, and after one year, around 70%. Due to the reduced stomach size, the patient needs less food to feel full.
