Info
Stokes Croft is the name of a road in Bristol, England. It is part of the A38, a main road north of the city centre. Locals refer to the area around the road by the same name, however, this is not officially called Stokes Croft and is merely a nickname for the area. The road became a centre of industry during the mid-19th century, including the Carriage Works. After large-scale bombing in World War II, the area rebuilt itself as a centre of art, music and counter-cultural lifestyle. Banksy's mural The Mild Mild West is on Stokes Croft, and riots broke out with the decision to open a Tesco Express on Cheltenham Road. Later investigations suggested that the new shop was merely an excuse for local tensions brought on by years of bad financial management by Bristol City Council. The shop remains and is thriving among locals and local businesses.
