Carl Freedman Gallery (formerly Counter Gallery) is a contemporary art gallery situated in Margate, Kent, England. It was founded in 2003 by critic and curator Carl Freedman. First opening in 2003 at 44A Charlotte Road, off Old Street, London, the gallery moved to larger premises in September 2012 at 29 Charlotte Road. In 2018, the gallery expands further by opening a new gallery at Union Crescent in the centre of Margate, a seaside town in Kent. Carl Freedman Gallery will purchased part of the old Thanet Press building. The 10,000 square foot space is over two floors of a concrete 1960s commercial building which will also house Freedman’s print publishing business Counter Editions. An artist residency and roof top sculpture project space are also planned. The gallery established itself quickly with a critical and curatorial driven programme. Carl Freedman Gallery represents emerging British and international artists and most typically presents the artists first solo presentation in a commercial context. There are normally 6 - 7 exhibitions annually.
Artists represented include Nel Aerts, Katherine Bernhardt, Billy Childish, Edith Dekyndt, Jessie Flood-Paddock, Thilo Heinzmann, Ann Cathrin November Høibo, John McAllister, Ivan Seal, David Brian Smith, Fergal Stapleton, Michael Stevenson, Sebastian Stöhrer, Catherine Story, Pieter Vermeersch and Tori Wrånes.
