Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is a public state university established in 1997 at Chennai, India by the Government of Tamil Nadu under The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Act, 1996. It was named after Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, an Indian Jurist who was part of the committee which drafted the Indian Constitution. It was inaugurated in September 20, 1997 by His Excellency Shri. K.R.Narayanan, former President of India. All the Law Colleges in Tamil Nadu were brought under the control of this university by the said Act of the State legislature. It also started a Law school in it's own campus in the year 2002, which was named as the School of Excellence in Law, Chennai.
