The Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences (Spanish: Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educación, UMCE) is a public university specialising in pedagogy and located in the commune of Ñuñoa, Santiago, Chile.
The Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences (UMCE), is a public university, part of the Rector’s Council of Chilean Universities and one of the sixteen universities that form the Consortium of Public Chilean Universities. Its mission consists in serving educational purposes, in all their forms, addressing, mainly, professional teacher training – initial and in-service – for all the levels, sectors, and forms of the Chilean educational system. Besides, it includes a connection between education and health; without damaging other options demanded by society. Similarly, UMCE declares its permanent commitment to quality in order to fulfil its task, which materialises by exercising pertinent teaching, inclusive and innovative, nurtured by investigation, from constant and dynamic interaction with the natural, cultural and social environment. UMCE intends to distinguish itself as a significant reference in the training of educational professionals and areas related to its mission in the country, so that its academic contribution extends towards influential participation in the making of public policies related to education. For that purpose, UMCE will permanently interpret the country’s educational needs, through quality investigation that favourably influences the academic endeavour and the integral functioning of the national educational system. Its origin is the Pedagogical Institute created on April 29th, 1889, inside the University of Chile, as an institution pioneering in the training of qualified teachers. Previously, the training of elementary school teachers was carried out by normal schools. During the dictatorship, in 1981, a rule by decree (DFL N° 7) was enacted, and originated the Superior Academy of Pedagogical Sciences (ASCP), created from the Pedagogical Institute of the University of Chile in Santiago. UMCE was created through the Law N° 18.433 published in the Government gazette on September 4th, 1985, as successor and legal continuation of the ASCP, its statutes were established through a rule by decree (DFL N°1) from the Ministry of Education, which were published on April 23rd, 1986.
It is accredited by the National Commission on Accreditation (CNA) for a period of 3 years, between December 2016 until December 2019, in the areas of undergrad teaching and institutional management.
